MANDATE MEMORIES Mandate Memories is an original Stage Play written by Lionel Goldstein
and currently being adapted for the screen, by internationally renowned ERIC TILL |
| Mandate Memories' is essentially a 'two-hander'.
It is set in the very ordinary living room of a semi-detached house in the Home Counties of England, around forty miles from London. It is a rare, lovely, sunny English summer's day and the owner of the house - Jane Stirling, a well-preserved and attractive woman in her early 60's, is gardening... We can see a very small corner of the lawn through the French Doors. Jane's weeding is interrupted by a ring on her front door bell. She answers it and welcomes, with some reserve, an elderly man, early 80's, who has called Jane some two or three hours before, asking to see her and telling her he has a package for her. The man, Gustav Frolich, presents himself of something of an enigma. He is originally from Vienna but now lives, by way of the vicissitudes of the Second World War, in Israel. This information sparks Jane's interest - and not in a positive way, for we learn that Jane's Father - whom she never knew - was killed by Jewish Terrorists during the days of the British Mandate for Palestine. Frolich eventually presents Jane Stirling with his 'package' - which is a letter from Jane's Father to her Mother. Since it is not addressed to Jane, she is reluctant to open it... In the meantime, Frolich reveals that although he and Jane are strangers, in fact, he knows a great deal about her... This compelling and controversial story deals with memories and atonement and the inability of the guilty to forgive themselves... In the end we discover that perhaps it may be somewhat easier to be forgiven by the victims. * * * MANDATE MEMORIES |
